Proto-Indo-Europääsch

Substantiv

*wódr̥ (neutrum)

Deklinatschoon

Oblique stem proterokinetic *udén- or acrostatic *wédn̥-.

Bedüden

  1. Water

Etymologie

Possibly of Indo-Uralic origin — compare the Uralic root *wete, whence Finnish vesi and Hungarian víz — but the suggestion that Indo-European and Uralic are related is controversial. Kronasser proposed in 1966 that there was an original root noun *wed-, the source of both the r/n-heteroclitic, and the *wid(a)- (water). Starke and Kloekhorst argue that the latter is of Luwian origin, from the adjective (wida-, wet) (from PIE *wed-o-). Compare also Old Armenian գետ (get), an o-stem from Proto-Indo-European *wed-os-.
