Vörlaag:etymtree/Doku

This template is used to display trees of descendants of a term. It reduces duplication of information by keeping the descendant information for several languages in one place.

Parameters

1=

The language code of the language the template is placed in, and for which the descendants are to be shown.

branch_term=

The term that the descendants should be shown for. This is used to retrieve the appropriate sub-tree from a larger tree of descendants. The default is the name of the current page, so it is rarely needed to override this.

2=

The language code of the root language that the term originates from. This is optional, and defaults to the current language if not given. This is used to show a partial descendant tree of a term that was inherited from an older parent language. For example, it would be used to show the descendants of a Proto-Germanic term that descended from Proto-Indo-European, and which has descendants outside Germanic.

3=

The term in the root language. This should be specified if the second parameter is present, and allows the root of the tree to be found. If omitted, it defaults to the branch_term= value, which itself defaults to the current page.

In both cases, the tree is retrieved from Template:etymtree/ine-pro/*wódr̥. In the second case, the current language is the root language of the tree, so it's not necessary to specify the second and third parameters.

Creating and modifying trees

Descendant trees are stored at a subpage named Template:etymtree/(root language code)/(root term). For example, the three for all the descendants of the Proto-Indo-European word *wódr̥ is stored at Template:etymtree/ine-pro/*wódr̥, while descendants of Latin vita are placed at Template:etymtree/la/vita. These subpages are formatted with normal wikitext, with bulleted lists indented to show the relationships between various parts of the tree. Each list item begins with the language code, followed by a colon and then any terms in that language, and other comments if appropriate. Terms should be linked to with {{l}}, as usual.
