Etymologie

Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-EuropÀÀsch *tewtĂ©h₂ (“the people; tribe”) with the semantic shift "people" → "army" → "camp". However that has been criticized as unlikely (the normal development would be "camp" → "army"). Kloekhorst argues that Hittite word can formally only reflect an i-stem tewt-i-, and finally endorses an alternative etymology proposed by Melchert, from PIE *dÊ°h₁-uti-, a zero-grade derivative of *dÊ°eh₁- (“to do, put, place”) (whence also Hittite (dai-i/ti-).
